Silk Road

      The Silk Road was the first successful online marketplace that existing on the dark net and leveraged cryptocurreny as a payment rails. Its purpose was to help buyers and sellers transact boarderlessly and anonymously, without legal and regulatory oversight of the items being transacted. Anything and everything was allowed, from illegal contraband such as guns, drugs and hacked banking information to illegal services such as hit-men & hookers.

     The marketplace was shut down by U.S. regulatory bodies in 2013 and its creator Ross William Ulbricht is serving 40 years + two life sentences.
