A signature is a cryptographic value that is uniquely calculated from some private piece of data, that is used verify and validate activities of a source.

In the world of cryptocurrency and blockchain signatures are used in situations where value is transmitted; the address from where assets are being sent must sign off on the transaction with its private key. In order to keep the private key a secret, the key is put through a hashing algorithm and the output is used as a stamp. This validates the provenance of that transaction, aka that the actual owner of an asset is conducting the transaction.
