Side Chain

A “side chain” is a mechanism employed by blockchains that allow for fluid transfer of assets between separate environments. Side Chains (also called Child Chains) run alongside some base layer blockchain another and leverage the consensus security guarantees of the original chain while offering some form of operation alterations, such as confirmation times, native assets, transaction throughput and so on.

Side chains were created as a solution to the scalability issues that plague blockchain technology and thus are commonly used in projects that focus on second layer scalability solutions.

What is unique about the use of side chains is that they providing hybrid off-chain/on-chain possibility, by moving operations off-chain from the mother blockchain, on-chain to their environments
