Applications and software technology as a whole architecturally exist in the form of a “Stack”; Layers of technology piled on top of one another.
Second Layer technology is also known as scaling layer technology.
Within the cryptocurrency and greater digital asset industry, scaling happens in many ways, one of which is the building of an enhanced operational layer on top of a base layer. This method offloads security ( by leveraging the base layer’s security) and allows total focus on the second layer efficiencies and capacities.
While there are no theoretic limitations as to how many layers can exist in a technology; when thinking in terms of blockchain technology there are generally up to 3 addressable layers.
