PoS is the acronym for Proof-of-Stake.

Proof-of-Stake is an algorithm used in distributed cryptocurrency networks for reaching consensus. The concept of PoS is based on the principles of vested interest/skin-in-the-game decision making.

Nodes in Proof-of-stake environments are called validators. The system operates by requiring any participant interested in becoming a network validator to lock up a certain amount of the networks crypto-asset. Those locked up assets act as a promise to act accordingly and any actor that behaves maliciously is punished by having their locked-up assets taken away from them.

Compared against PoW consensus mechanisms, PoS is typically faster and orders of magnitude more efficient in terms of energy consumption.
