Orphan Block

An Orphan block is a valid block that was not appended to a blockchain because of timing issues such as network latency. Also called “stale blocks”, these blocks continue to exist, isolated, in a blockchain’s digital hyperspace; however, it is not connected to the chain and therefore not utilized as a reference point for further blocks.

Orphan Blocks are only found in Proof-Of-Work blockchain environments due to the competitive nature of open consensus mechanisms.
