Ledger

A ledger is a single source of truth that tracks all accounts and their according activity. It can be thought of a multi-entry accounting system where participants can go in order to verify & validate the according to information. Ideally, each industry/environment has its own ledger.

In the context of cryptocurrency and blockchain, a ledger is a digital bulletin board that is updated and maintained by the network consensus participants (miner/consensus nodes).

Ledgers are the technology that are capable of removing pesky 3rd party middlemen by acting as a neutral source of truth.
