Field-Programmable Gate Array

      FPGA is the acronym for Field-Programmable Gate Array. 

     A Field Programmable Gate Array is a semiconductor device that is based CLB’s (configurable logic blocks) that are linked through programmable interconnects. 

     In the context of blockchain and cryptocurrency, FPGA’s can be used interchangeably with GPU’s and ASIC’s for the purposes of mining. Where FPGA’s unique selling point is in the adaptive flexibility in its utility. ASIC’s are hardwired to operate for a single purpose and single purpose only (A Bitcoin ASIC’s device like the Antminer can only be used for Bitcoin mining). FPGA’s can be reprogrammed for any necessary use case Ad Hoc. 

     Since the arrival of ASIC’s machine, the FPGA’s have generally been disregarded for mining uses because they were slower & couldn’t provide enough computation. However, since then (circa 2013) FPGA’s have become far more sufficient and can be used in AeroSpace technology as well as cryptocurrency mining.
