Ethereum Virtual Machine

EVM is an abbreviation used for Ethereum-Virtual-Machine.

The Ethereum Virtual Machine is a layer of abstraction between the execution code and the execution machine. This layer is used to create a safer environment for the processing of code as well as allow code to be more portable. Whenever a smart contract is being processed for the Ethereum blockchain is put through the Ethereum Virtual Machine, a process that breaks human readable software code down into machine readable Opcode & Byte code. The EVM acts as a final sandbox or testing environment to ensure code can properly be interpreted by the actual Ethereum Network.
