Centralized Exchange

CEX is the acronym for Centralized Exchange.

A centralized exchange is a platform for individuals to trade assets between each other that is governed by a single authoritative body. Centralized Exchanges are profit driven organizations that custody its users assets on their books and thus have the ability to confiscate, censor, and freeze its users assets.

Centralized exchanges do offer incredible benefits of liquidity, volume, and execution order times but they come with a tradeoff. Within the cryptocurrency and digital asset industry, centralized exchanges own the private keys associated with digital assets and appear as an anti-thesis to the promises of financial sovereignty that decentralized assets offer.
