51% Attack

A 51% attack is a method of “breaking” a proof-of-work blockchain by accumulating more than half of the network’s computational power and leveraging it to circumvent the consensus mechanism.

If such an attack takes place, the attackers are able to deny incoming transactions (halt economic activity), reverse certain transactions as they happen (double-spend).

It is important to note that this kind of attack does not allow the attackers to alter historic blocks nor does it allow them to create new coins.
